Marcia Marcus, Role Play: Paintings 1958-1973 is the catalog for an exhibition at Eric Firestone Gallery, New York (October – December 2017). With 23 color plates, documentary photographs, and an essay by Jessica Bell Brown, this catalog constitutes a major re-introduction to Marcia Marcus – a radical portraitist. Marcus worked at the intersection of painting, proto-performance art, and identity politics. Her paintings – of artists, writers, family, friends, and acquaintances – examine the shifting roles we all embody. Figures are orchestrated into stylish settings with patterning and embellishment, telling a story about the time, culturally and socially. The work reveals Marcus’ subversive playfulness as well as her unapologetic gaze at female desire, race, and motherhood. Along with work from the collection of the artist, the catalog also illustrates paintings on loan from museums and private collections.
