Patrick Alston explores the complexities of language, perception, and the psychology of color. Drawing from the rich cultural and visual history of the South Bronx, Alston blends gestural mark-making, layered textures, and bold palettes to create compositions that interrogate the tensions between structure and spontaneity, control and chaos.
His practice, rooted in both emotional depth and intellectual inquiry, invite viewers into a dialogue, one that encourages introspection, perceptual shifts, and an engagement with the nuances of abstraction. His works often evoke a sense of unexpected unity within seemingly chaotic arrangements, pushing boundaries and offering fresh perspectives on the interconnected nature of the world around us.
Alston has presented solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture in Charlotte, NC (2023–2024); Ross + Kramer Gallery in New York, NY (2023); and Bode Projects in Berlin, Germany (2022). His paintings have also been featured in prominent group exhibitions around the world, including Art Basel (Miami, Basel), Frieze Los Angeles, and the Metropolitan Museum of Manila. Alston studied Art and Psychology at Wabash College in Indiana. He currently works between New Haven, Connecticut, and New York City
